POISONED PET FOOD:

A RECALL REFINEMENT AND MORE DISCUSSION ON THE HUMAN IMPLICATIONS:

According to an article in the Seattle Times today Costco has refined its recall of its Kirkland Signature Premium Dog Food 2-Flavour Variety Pack. They have issued a recall for the Kirkland Signature Lamb and Rice canned dog food due to contamination from the "rice protein concentrate" (or whatever it was) from American Nutrition. The Costco website, of course, has no news of any recalls even though the variety pack was recalled some time ago.

Meanwhile there is an interesting discussion of the safety of the human food supply in an article from Business Week today. Titled 'How Safe is the Food Supply' it notes a number of interesting facts such as how Europe recently escaped a major disaster when bacterially contaminated vitamin A from China almost made it into infant formula. It also notes how in the past few weeks that the FDA has issued recalls or warnings for products as diverse as milk, olives, bottled water, bread, prepared fruit trays, melons, oysters and peanut butter. The contaminants have included salmonella, listeria, norovirus, nitric acid, arsenic and "even wire fragments". Every years an estimated 76 million Americans suffer from food poisoning and about 5,000 people die from it.
