IRAN: FREE MAHMOUD SALEHI NOW:
On May 1st, former president of the Bakery Workers' Association in the city of Saqez, Kurdistan Province, was arrested along with 40 other workers so as to prevent a May Day rally in that city. On April 9th, 2007 Salehi was brought to the offices of the security forces under the pretext that they wished to negotiate with him regarding May Day events this year. Once there he was informed that a final verdict in regards to the charges from 2004 had been reached, and he was immediately transferred to the Sanandaj Central Prison. He was refused contact with his lawyer and family and wasn't even allowed to take his medication with him. The medication is for a severe kidney problem. Under the present conditions his life is in danger.
The people at the online labour solidarity site Labour Start are renewing their plea for letters protesting these arrests that were made for the "crime" of simple labour organizing, demanding that Salehi's prison conditions be eased and that he in fact should be released.
